Misconceptions About Plastic Packaging and Plastics

The primary source of plastic is generally the residual materials from petroleum refineries. Only 4% of the world’s total petroleum production is used for plastic manufacturing, and only 3% of that is used to produce plastic bags.

Plastic production utilizes petroleum by-products that would otherwise go unused and pollute the environment, reduces the consumption of fossil-based fuels, and helps economically prevent food losses. Plastics have significantly reduced food losses worldwide. It is important to note that the energy required to produce a food item is ten times higher than the energy needed to produce a plastic packaging material. By using plastics as packaging, food losses, which are around 50% in general, have been reduced to approximately 3% in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Plastics do not pollute the environment; humans do. Improper use of plastics by people and insufficient recycling negatively affect the environment. Environmental pollution is a result of rapid population growth, unplanned urbanization, uncontrolled industrialization, and the consequent depletion of natural resources. Blaming plastics for environmental pollution is unfair and incorrect. Therefore, raising environmental awareness and educating consumers about the importance of recycling is extremely important. In our country, the main challenge in this field is the lack of sufficient awareness. As a result, waste is not collected separately at its source, and recycling cannot become widespread.

Plastic is not waste; it is a valuable material and raw resource. Plastic bags, bottles, and other packaging materials protect the environment through recycling. When plastics are reused or recovered for processing, raw material sources are preserved, energy consumption in plastic production is reduced, the lifespan of landfills is extended, the operating costs of waste transportation and disposal decrease, non-renewable raw material resources are conserved, the amount of pollutants released from chimneys decreases, and energy resources are preserved. Recovering plastics achieves up to 95% energy savings.

Plastic films are the thinnest and lightest packaging materials compared to other materials. Modern plastic bags use 70% less plastic than when they were first introduced, and garbage bags use 50% less. Thinner plastics mean less energy in production and transportation, which ultimately results in lower greenhouse gas emissions. No other industry has achieved such a level of resource conservation.

In the United States, Progressive Bag Affiliates, operating under the American Chemistry Council, has proven through research that single-use plastic bags are far more environmentally friendly than paper bags. Their report disproves the claim that plastic bags cause global warming and environmental pollution. The report demonstrates that single-use plastic bags consume the least energy and have the lowest environmental impact across production, processing, and recycling stages.

Developed countries emphasize that the modern approach to plastic bags is not bans but the 3R principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Compared to other packaging materials, recycling plastic consumes less energy. Recycling 500 grams of paper requires 91% more energy than recycling the same amount of plastic.

In Europe, around 50% of packaged products are wrapped in plastic, while plastics make up only 17% of household waste. Plastic bags occupy less than 0.5% of landfill space.

Plastic bags do not remain intact in nature for centuries as commonly believed. It is known that a plastic bag decomposes in 8–10 years. With new technologies and biodegradable materials, this period can be reduced to around one year.

Blaming plastics and banning them is not a solution. Attributing recent increases in certain diseases to plastics is far from rational. The two most essential things for human survival are air and water. Therefore, it is more meaningful to investigate the causes of rising health issues in these resources rather than in plastic bags. We must explore ways to provide these essential resources to people in a cleaner and safer way.

If we fail to educate the public and recover plastics for recycling, simply banning plastics will not offer a long-term solution. Today, many municipalities and institutions’ approaches to banning plastic bags are not solution-oriented. Abandoning plastic bags and labeling them as the sole culprit only changes the nature of the problem and never contributes to a true solution. In countries where plastic bags are sold, taxed, or banned, usage of alternative types of plastic bags has increased proportionally, and overall material consumption has not decreased.

In the European Union, where public awareness is highest, plastic bags are not banned. All such initiatives have been rejected by the European Commission for violating the EU treaty and Packaging Directive. Authorities seeking to ban plastic bags would benefit from studying EU practices before making decisions.

Research in Europe and the United States shows that plastic bags are the best environmental choice. When used responsibly, plastic bags are light, durable, strong, energy-efficient, affordable, reusable, and recyclable. As in all advanced countries, we believe the solution to the plastic bag issue lies not in bans, but in ensuring their efficient use, promoting recycling, and raising environmental awareness among the public.
