12 Steps to Choosing a Good Plastic Packaging Supplier
1. To avoid experiencing problems with the products you purchase—or to resolve such problems quickly—prefer working directly with manufacturers or their authorized distributors. This ensures that there is a responsible company behind the products you buy. The best way to verify whether a company is truly a manufacturer is to visit its facilities. Visit the production sites of the companies you plan to work with.
2. Since food packaging is a high-volume product that occupies significant storage space, the production area must be spacious, well-ventilated, and on flat ground. Additionally, the general environmental and hygienic conditions of the facility’s location must meet proper standards. Therefore, your supplier’s factory should have not only machinery but also large, clean, and secure indoor storage areas where your products can be safely kept. Visit potential suppliers to assess this yourself.
3. The hygiene of the area where food packaging is produced is extremely important. Attached is a checklist that may assist you in evaluating your supplier in this regard.
4. The quality of the product you purchase depends on the manufacturer’s ability to control every stage of production. All processes—from plastic granules (rice-grain-sized plastic pieces) entering the facility to the finished product—must be performed within the same plant. Technically, the manufacturer should have an Extruder (sheet machine), Thermoforming machine, Injection machine, Packaging machine, Crusher (grinder), Cooling units, and Compressors. If one of these machines—such as the extruder—is missing, it raises doubts about whether the manufacturer can guarantee consistent quality. Ask your supplier whether these machines exist and, if possible, see them on-site.
5. Another factor affecting the quality of the product is its mold. A company having an in-house mold workshop ensures better quality control and allows for easier, faster, and more cost-effective mold modifications or repairs when required.
6. Check whether your supplier has the necessary legal documents. In Türkiye, packaging manufacturers are required to have the following: a Non-Sanitary Establishment Operating Permit (GSM), an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report, and a Production Permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Additionally, TSEK certification, ISO 9001:2000 certification, and HACCP certification demonstrate the company’s compliance with production systems and hygiene standards.
7. Since plastic packaging products are manufactured fully automatically, high-quality machinery is essential for consistent production. Your supplier’s machines must be capable of producing your product with the same quality every time (avoiding the risk of one good batch and one bad batch). Visiting several suppliers producing similar products will allow you to compare them.
8. Evaluate your supplier in terms of Social Responsibility, which has become a top priority in the developed world. Are employees working under safe and healthy conditions? Does the company use child labor or employ unregistered workers without social security? Does it meet its obligations such as taxes and electricity payments? Although these issues may seem difficult to detect, observing the facility carefully and speaking with workers and managers can provide valuable insights. One must remember that authorities increasingly monitor such illegal practices, which ultimately harm both the non-compliant companies and their business partners. Most importantly, companies lacking social responsibility cannot be expected to act honestly toward their customers.
9. A company that meets all the above criteria and has been operating in the market for a significant period has already proven itself in its sector. Therefore, the company's founding year and experience are highly important. You can obtain information about the company's partners and establishment date from the chamber of commerce or online sources such as the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. The company’s registered capital should also be examined, as it legally reflects the firm’s obligations toward its suppliers, customers, and employees.
10. The team of the company that will serve you must be capable of doing so effectively. Single-person firms or companies with insufficient staffing often struggle to handle essential functions such as production, sales, purchasing, and accounting, resulting in inadequate service and delays in supply and operations. Visit their offices and ask to meet the administrative staff.
11. Examine your supplier’s references. Has the company worked with reputable firms in your sector, in Türkiye, or abroad? Has it been able to provide long-term, consistent service to them? In cases where necessary, request contact information for these references and verify them yourself.
12. Review your supplier’s pricing. Prioritize whether the price reflects the value you receive in terms of service and product quality. Base your decision on pricing that ensures a stable and continuous supply, rather than simply the lowest price.
