The “Use-and-Keep” Era Begins: $4.5 Million Investment in Refillable Cups
Since the 1990s, “use-and-dispose” products have been a part of our daily lives. Now, that era is transforming — and the change begins with cups and packaging. Leading this transformation in Turkey, SEM Plastik has invested $4.5 million to start producing “use-and-keep” (refillable) coffee cups.
What’s happening?
According to Yavuz Eroğlu, Chairman of PAGEV, PAGÇEV, and SEM Plastik, the global refill packaging market is expected to be one of the fastest-growing sectors in the next decade.
The company is not just producing cups — it’s building Turkey’s first large-scale “use-and-keep” model. A $4.5 million machinery and automation line has already been established.
The products were showcased at the Eurasia Packaging Istanbul Fair, held between October 22–25, 2025, which welcomed over 80,000 visitors.
Why is it important?
Until now, the “use-and-dispose” culture dominated the market. But environmental pressures and sustainability goals have brought major change. According to Eroğlu, “Refill is no longer just an eco-friendly choice — it’s becoming a necessity.”
This investment also represents a significant step for Turkey in terms of waste management and packaging transformation.
Goals and Opportunities
SEM Plastik aims to expand this model beyond the local market to neighboring countries and global markets.
Global research supports this shift: the refill market is projected to grow by 5–6% annually, reaching approximately $35.78 billion by 2037.
Meanwhile, major brands are already preparing for this transformation — for example, leading coffee chains have started “refillable cup” campaigns worldwide.
In Summary
The age of disposable products is coming to an end — making way for “use-and-keep” innovations. SEM Plastik’s $4.5 million investment marks an important milestone in Turkey’s role in this global transformation. Now, all eyes are on how widely this model will spread.
