“An Eco-Friendly Alternative to the ‘Use-and-Throw’ Culture: SEM Plastik Invests $4.5 Million in Refillable Cups”
As the call for sustainability in the packaging industry grows stronger, SEM Plastik has made a transformative move with a total investment of $4.5 million, stepping away from the “single-use” approach. With the production of Türkiye’s first industrial-scale refillable coffee cups, the company is not only adopting an environmentally conscious production model but also setting a new standard in the sector.
At the Eurasia Packaging Istanbul Fair held this October, which welcomed over 80,000 visitors, SEM Plastik’s booth attracted significant attention. The company’s newly developed refillable coffee cups were introduced as a sustainable alternative to the single-use culture.
Yavuz Eroğlu, Chairman of PAGEV, PAGÇEV, and SEM Plastik, stated:
“This investment is almost the size of a factory. In other words, we haven’t just created a product — we’ve established an entirely new production model.”
Emphasizing that the refill system is not merely an eco-friendly choice but a transformation that will soon become a necessity, Eroğlu added:
“The term ‘use-and-throw’ is giving way to the philosophy of ‘use-don’t-throw’.”
SEM Plastik aims to expand the reach of these refillable cups beyond Türkiye, targeting neighboring countries and global markets. The initiative is described not just as a new product, but as “a movement of transformation.”
The global scale of the refill market is also noteworthy. According to research firm Research Nester, the global refill packaging market reached approximately $17.19 billion in 2024 and is expected to exceed $35.78 billion by 2037.
Furthermore, under the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is set to come into effect in 2026, brands will be required to include multi-use packaging on their shelves. Although this is not yet mandatory in Türkiye, companies working with global chains are advised to prepare for this shift in advance.
